Toby is a young, approximately 2-year-old Great Dane who was found as a stray and is currently in a Colorado shelter, waiting for a second chance at a loving home. While his past is a mystery, we do know that this gentle giant has a sensitive soul and is still learning to trust the world around him. He is not yet neutered but will be as part of his journey to rescue and adoption.
💙 Personality & Temperament
-
Shy & Fearful: Toby is navigating the challenges of shelter life, which can be overwhelming and frightening. He needs time, patience, and kindness to help him feel secure and build confidence.
-
People Affiliation: Outside of the kennel, he has shown the ability to bond but can become overwhelmed. He will alert bark, low growl, and try to walk away or avoid unfamiliar people, but with slow introductions and a calm presence, he’s learning to trust.
-
Gentle Play Style: Despite his fears, Toby plays gently and does not use his teeth or claws.
-
Withdrawn but Hopeful: While he may initially retreat from attention, a quiet, understanding home will help him come out of his shell and learn that people can be kind.
-
Needs a Calm Approach: Toby is wary of fast movements and loud noises, so a peaceful environment will be essential for his adjustment.
🐾 Dog Compatibility
-
Toby has shown no concerns with other dogs while in the shelter and may do well with a calm, confident canine friend to help him adjust.
-
His behavior with cats and small animals is unknown, but his gentle nature suggests he may adapt with careful introductions.
🧑🏫 Training & Skills
-
Due to his unknown history, we are unsure if Toby is house-trained or crate-trained.
-
He will benefit from gentle, positive reinforcement training to help him feel safe and secure.
-
A predictable routine, patient guidance, and slow introductions to new experiences will be key in helping him gain confidence.
-
Walks may be new to him, but with his gentle demeanor, he could learn to enjoy them at his own pace.
