Greetings Hoomans:

My name is Winston and I am a BIG BIG deal and I know it!  Everywhere I go in town, people seem to know my name like a “doglebrity”. I constantly hear that I am the biggest boy folks have ever seen!!  I don’t know about that – I just know I’m a big, big softy at heart.

I came from a loving family that had me since I was a puppy but mom told me due to challenges unrelated to me, I needed to go find another special family to call my own.  She made extra sure Rocky Mountain Great Dane Rescue was the place for me to go.

Let me tell you more about my awesomeness:  I have grown up with kids and great with them but given my size, children 10 years and up are best.  I have also lived with two female Spaniels and one of them really likes bossing me around! I am now living with two female Great Danes in my foster home.  They seem a little scared of me. I’m not sure why but I think I’ll keep up this tough guy act a little longer to get the best spot on the couch.

I haven’t had much interaction with cats but there is a good chance I will have fun with chase.  I promise to be gentle if I catch them.

Some other fun facts about me:  My favorite show on YouTube is called “Raise the Woof” and as soon as I hear the jingle, I get super happy and run to the television.  It’s the best show ever! Other fun facts — when I drink water, I have to drink outside on the porch because I like to stick my entire head in the bowl like I’m bobbing for apples!  My splashes are epic.

Worth noting —  I can also be “Great Dane Stubborn”.  Oh – that reminds me — have I got a joke for you:  Where does a 240 lb Great Dane sit in the movie theater?  Yep, you guessed it — Anywhere he wants to!! (And if you can’t find me, look for this big woofer next to the popcorn machine)

Big Boy Winston Medical Update: 9-26-24

Thank you for supporting Winston — the many thoughts and prayers have been shared with this special boy!!! It means so much to us and Winston!

Winston came to RMGDRI at 242 lbs with an unusual looking infection in his rear paw, struggling to place weight on his paw. Working with Boulder Vet Hospital – Dr Jordan and team — we have been able to successfully rule out NO Neoplasia (NO underlying cancer)!!!

What we have confirmed is Winston has 3 DIFFERENT bacteria in his paw that are highly antibiotic resistant to most antibiotics. Culture was run and we were able to pinpoint which antibiotics could treat the bacteria. He needs 2 types for treatment.

We have deliberated amputating vs antibiotics and we have opted to first try 30 days of antibiotics course along with 2-3 time daily wound care change before consulting a soft tissue wound care surgeon.

And we are seeing improvement in his paw!! With TLC wound care and starting his antibiotics we are hopeful.  Winston is also on pain medication. He plays more and more each day which we believe indicates a happy boy feeling better – and he’s walking better too.

Dr Jordan has worked with us on keeping his expenses down but as dog lovers — we all know – histopathology, biopsy, culture, blood work, urinalysis, wound care bandaging, special diet, medications — it adds up… antibiotics will likely run for 3 months.

Winston isn’t even 5 years old; his blood work is excellent and he is an outstanding patient— oh and Winston has lost 10 lbs!! You’re doing amazing Big Winnie!!!
