What It Really Means to Foster a Great Dane

By: Jessie Hillebrand, RMGDRI volunteer

At Rocky Mountain Great Dane Rescue Inc., our fosters are the heart of everything we do. They open their homes, their routines, and their hearts to dogs who need a second chance - and in return, they get to be part of something truly life-changing.

Fostering isn’t just about temporarily housing a dog. It’s about being part of a dog’s journey from uncertainty to safety, from confusion to confidence, and from survival to belonging. It’s not always easy - but it is ALWAYS meaningful.

The Reality of Fostering a Great Dane

Great Danes are often called gentle giants, and for good reason. They are affectionate, loyal, and deeply connected to their people. But when they come into rescue, they’re often carrying more than just their big personalities - they’re carrying fear, uncertainty, and sometimes past experiences that make the world feel a little scary and unfamiliar.

You might experience:

🐾 A dog who follows you everywhere for reassurance

🐾 A pup who isn’t quite sure about new people yet

🐾 A curious nose checking out countertops (because… food 😄)

🐾 A quiet observer who’s just taking it all in

🐾 They might test boundaries as they adjust - or need to learn house manners

🐾 A dog that really just needs time to decompress and feel safe

And while every dog is different, one thing is consistent: they are looking for stability and kindness.

That’s where fosters step in and make all the difference.

The Reward: Watching Trust Grow

One of the most powerful parts of fostering is witnessing transformation.

It doesn’t happen all at once. It happens in small, quiet moments:

🐾The first time they follow you from room to room

🐾The first relaxed nap without worry

🐾The soft lean against your leg for comfort

🐾The moment they realize they are safe

And then one day, it clicks - they trust you.

That trust is something a foster never forgets.

There is something incredibly special about knowing you were the one who helped a dog feel safe enough to just… be a dog again.

The Honest Challenge: It Takes Patience, Heart… and Goodbye

Fostering a Great Dane is deeply rewarding - but it also comes with moments that genuinely tug at your heart.

There may be:

➤ Accidents in the home while they’re adjusting

➤ Nervous or unsure behaviors in a new environment

➤ Learning curves with structure, training, and routines

➤ Emotional moments as they start to trust you and settle in

And then, the part we don’t talk about enough… the sadness when they get adopted.

Because by that point, they’re not “just a foster dog” anymore. They’ve become part of your daily rhythm, your couch, your routine - and your heart. Saying goodbye can feel heavy, even when you know it’s the goal. It’s a mix of pride and grief all at once: so very happy they found their person, but a bit emotional because your home will feel a little quieter without them.

This is where fostering becomes so meaningful. You’re not just “watching a dog for a while” - you’re the bridge between their past and their forever.

Fostering means loving a dog enough to let them go at the right time - knowing your heartbreak is part of their healing journey, and your loving, temporary home is what makes their forever home possible.

Why We Foster: The Bigger Picture

Fostering is where rescue truly begins - and where hope starts to feel real for a dog who has lost their way.

Without foster homes, dogs are often left to cope in shelter or kennel environments that can be loud, overwhelming, and confusing. In those spaces, many never get the chance to fully relax, heal, or show who they really are underneath the stress.

A foster home changes everything.

It gives a dog something they may not have felt in a long time - or ever:

💙 A quiet, safe place to finally exhale

💙 The time and space to heal, both physically and emotionally

💙 Gentle guidance as they learn routines, manners, and trust again

💙 A real glimpse of what it means to be part of a home

In foster care, scared dogs start to soften. Shut-down dogs start to come out of their shell. Goofy personalities begin to peek through when they finally feel safe enough to show them.

And there’s something else just as important: every foster home that opens up means another dog gets the chance to be saved. It creates space. It creates movement. It creates possibility.

Fostering doesn’t just change one life - it quietly ripples outward, making room for the next dog who is still waiting for someone to say, “You can come with me.”

RMGDRI Foster Requirements

To ensure the safety and success of our dogs and foster homes, we ask that all applicants meet the following requirements:

✓ Must be 21 years of age or older

✓ Own your home or have landlord approval for fostering large breed dogs

✓ Have a securely fenced yard or provide a plan for safe exercise of your foster Dane

✓ All current pets must be spayed/neutered and up-to-date on vaccinations

✓ Have reliable transportation for vet appointments

✓ Be able to keep foster dogs separate from your own pets initially

✓ Agree to a home visit before fostering

The Heart of Fostering

Fostering a Great Dane isn’t about having the perfect house or a perfectly organized life. It’s about having enough space - physically and emotionally - for a dog who just needs time, patience, and steady kindness.

It’s found in the small, quiet wins that often go unnoticed. The first time they relax on a couch. The day they choose to follow you from room to room. The moment they start to trust that they’re safe. The day they dig through the toy box with excitement and play like they’ve finally remembered what joy feels like.

Fostering is the bridge between a dog’s past and the life they’re just beginning to discover is possible. It’s temporary by design - but its impact lasts far longer than the stay.

And in return, you get to be part of something meaningful: giving a dog the chance to begin again.
