☀️ Suns Out, Tongues Out! 10 Fun Summer Activities to do with your Great Dane! ☀️

Summer has officially arrived, and if you have a Great Dane, you already know one thing...

You're not just planning summer activities for yourself - you're planning them for your 140-pound shadow who insists on supervising every barbecue, road trip, and backyard gathering.

Whether your Dane is a professional pool lounger, an expert squirrel observer, or a world-class couch potato who occasionally agrees to leave the air conditioning, there's plenty of summer fun to be had together.

Grab the leash, fill the water bowl, and let's make this a summer your gentle giant will never forget!

🍉 1. Host the Ultimate Backyard "Pool Pawty"

News flash: Great Danes aren't exactly Olympic swimmers.

But they are professional splashers.

Set up a kiddie pool, turn on the sprinkler, toss in a few floating toys, and watch your Dane proudly stand in two inches of water like they've conquered the ocean.

Bonus points if you provide frozen treats and a shady lounging area worthy of canine royalty.

🥾 2. Go on a "Sniffari"

Forget hiking for miles.

Your Great Dane would much rather spend 30 minutes investigating one particularly fascinating bush.

Take an early morning or evening walk somewhere new and let your pup enjoy a full sensory adventure.

Remember: the journey is measured in sniffs, not miles.

🍦 3. Become a Canine Ice Cream Chef

Nothing says summer like frozen snacks!

Whip up some dog-friendly popsicles using:

  • Plain Greek yogurt
  • Pumpkin puree
  • Peanut butter (xylitol-free)
  • Blueberries
  • Banana slices
  • Watermelon

Your Dane will inhale it in approximately 4.7 seconds...but they'll appreciate the effort.

🚗 4. Take a "Windows Down, Ears Flapping" Road Trip

Few things bring as much joy as watching a Great Dane's jowls flap dramatically in the breeze.

Plan a scenic drive to:

  • A dog-friendly park
  • A lake
  • The mountains
  • Your favorite pup-friendly coffee shop

Don't forget to stop for a pup cup - because obviously they earned it by sitting in the back seat looking adorable.

📸 5. Become Instagram Famous (Or At Least Try)

Summer is photo season!

Capture your Dane: 🌻 Sitting in a sunflower field.

🏔️ Exploring mountain trails.

🍉 Wearing an oversized sun hat they'll tolerate for exactly three seconds.

😎 Sporting sunglasses before immediately shaking them off.

The bloopers will probably be even better than the perfect shots and will be GREAT submissions for our annual RMGDRI calendar!

🌳 6. Throw a Great Dane Picnic

Pack some sandwiches for yourself and treats for your four-legged best friend.

Find a shady park, spread out a blanket, and enjoy an afternoon together.

Just remember...

If you leave your sandwich unattended for even one second, your "gentle giant" may suddenly become a very talented food critic.

🎾 7. Schedule a Backyard Play Date

Invite another friendly pup over and let the zoomies commence!

Watching two Great Danes run together is like witnessing a herd of baby giraffes discovering they have legs.

It's beautiful.

It's chaotic.

It's absolutely worth it.

🧠 8. Beat the Heat with Brain Games

Too hot outside?

Challenge your Dane indoors with:

  • Puzzle toys
  • Snuffle mats
  • Hide-and-seek
  • Obstacle courses made from couch cushions
  • A quick training session

Mental workouts are surprisingly exhausting - and much easier on those giant paws during hot weather.

🍽️ 9. Dine Al Fresco

Find a dog-friendly patio and enjoy dinner together.

Be prepared for:

  • Everyone stopping to pet your Dane.
  • At least five people asking, "How much does he weigh?"
  • Someone insisting they had a Great Dane "just like yours."

Your dog will graciously accept all compliments while secretly hoping someone drops a french fry.

❤️ 10. Spend the Day Just Being Together

Here's the truth...

Your Great Dane doesn't care whether you're hiking mountains, relaxing by the pool, or binge-watching TV in the air conditioning.

Their favorite place in the world is wherever you happen to be.

Even if that means following you to the bathroom.

Every.

Single.

Time.

☀️ Summer Survival Tips for Gentle Giants

Great Danes may be big, but they're not built for blazing summer heat.

Keep adventures safe by:

  • 💦 Bringing lots of fresh water.
  • 🌅 Walking during cooler mornings or evenings.
  • 🐾 Avoiding hot pavement.
  • 🌳 Taking plenty of shade breaks.
  • 🚗 Never leaving your Dane in a parked car.
  • 🥵 Watching for signs of overheating like excessive panting, drooling, weakness, or vomiting.
  • 🍽️ Avoiding strenuous exercise immediately before or after meals to help reduce the risk of bloat.

When your Dane starts melting into the grass like a giant puddle of dog, it's probably time to head inside.

🌞 Life Is Better With a Great Dane

Summer isn't about expensive vacations or elaborate plans.

It's about muddy paws, slobbery kisses, goofy smiles, spontaneous adventures, and making memories with the dog who thinks they're a 150-pound lap puppy.

At Rocky Mountain Great Dane Rescue, Inc., we've seen firsthand how these incredible dogs change lives - and how every summer adventure is just a little more fun when shared with a gentle giant.

If you've been thinking about adopting, fostering, volunteering, or supporting rescue, we'd love to have you join our family. Together, we can help more Great Danes find the loving homes, and summer adventures they all deserve.

So grab the leash, fill the water bowl, pack the treats, and get outside.

Summer is calling...

...and your Great Dane has already claimed the front seat. 🐾☀️
